21 Inning Game at Au Sable Forks

Another SABR member, Kris Doorey, found a 21 inning game between the Redford River Rats and the Au Sable Forks Spirits. The River Rats won, 2-0. This is marathon game # 645.  Good work, Kris.

20 Inning Game at Plattsburgh

Philip Lowry, a fellow SABR member, is tracking baseball games that go long. He's interested in matches that are 20 innings or more. I think that I found one for him.

The earliest that I can find mention of Plattsburgh Independents is 1908.  They played other local teams.  In 1923 that was members of the 26th Infantry, part of the US Army stationed at the Plattsburgh Barracks.

Three of the local papers mention the upcoming game.

Plattsburgh Daily Press - May 10, 1923

Plattsburgh Sentinel - May 11, 1923

The game went twenty innings, with the Army boys winning.  Although two of the papers picked it up, I couldn't find any details about the game.

Apparently this game and the rivalry were not soon forgotten, as two years later it was still being reported.

Bucky Harris's injured hand

This post is in response to another SABR email list question. SABR member Bob H shared this photo and asked:
Did Harris miss a few games with a hand injury late in the 1925 season, and manage from the bench?

from the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress newspaper site, Chronicling America, spans the years 1836-1922.  It wasn't going to be any help on this one.  So, I turned to one of my other favorite newspaper sites, Google News archives.

The Bend Bulletin - September 23, 1925

The Independent - September 23, 1925

These articles partly answer Bob H's question.  He did get injured, but they don't address how he managed.  More research to be done.

Indoor Baseball

There has been a bit of discussion about indoor baseball on the SABR listserve as of late.  I thought I'd do a bit of research.  The following articles focus mainly on the origins of that game, with a few others highlighting leagues and the evolution of the game.  Bonus points for The Florida Star writer using the term "Jack Frostican".  These articles are from the Library of Congress's site, Chronicling America.  There are many other articles available through Google News.
