I don't know if the despondent player, Walter Curly, was the same Walter Curley who played for Minneapolis in 1902 and Sioux City in 1904.

1916 Tri-Copper League

In 1916 the Tri-Copper League was in its second season.  The league consisted of three teams.  The Miners, The Smelters.  And the Millers.  Yes, it was copper they were after.  Ray, Arizona, was about 77 miles to the ESE of Phoenix and about 23 miles NNW of Hayden.

Google Maps

My guess is that the teams were formed by the mining company and they were a diversion and entertainment for the men.

The Afro-American - February 27, 1920

Gary Ashwill, over at agate type, featured a few articles about the Negro National League's birthday.  I found another article that lists the players for each of the six teams.

UPDATE: I found a few more supporting articles.
