Green River

This is from a Chattanooga newspaper, probably in 1904.  I was taken by the two young ball players

Bat and Ball

Los Angeles Herald - August 1, 1898
This article originally spanned two columns.  I combined them for ease of viewing.  I don't think that the "Bug" Holliday paragraph has anything to do with the Trilbys and Bakersfield game, but it was too good to leave out.

1912 Olympic Games - Americans vs. Swedes

Staying on the Olympic theme, I found these pages in The Olympic Games, Stockholm 1912 edited by James E. Sullivan. An American team played a Swedish team on July 15, 1912.

The next day two teams composed of American athletes played an exhibition game.

Exhibition Baseball at the 1912 Olympics

In 1912 the Olympic Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden.  Here are some of the articles in the American press about the exhibition baseball games that were played.  Note that the first two stories seem to have come from the same wire service, but were modified by the local editors.  I find it culturally interesting that H.P. Drew, the sprinter from Springfield, Mass., was referred to as 'colored' by The Washington (D.C.) Times and as a 'negro' by The Tacoma Times.

The Washington Times - July 16, 1912

The Tacoma Times - June 17, 1912

The San Francisco Call - June 17, 1912

The Tacoma Times - June 19, 1912
