The Yellow Kid and Baseball

John Thorn, the Official Historian of MLB, shared a photo on facebook of a pin featuring The Yellow Kid holding a baseball bat.  That sparked me to research what other baseball and The Yellow Kid connections there were.  I found a few.

Apparently Hogan's Alley was popular enough to be spun into a theatre production.

A bit about the origin of "The Yellow Kid" from an article titled: Something About the Comic Artists Who Draw the Funny Pictures in the Sunday  Papers

Evansville Courier and Press - June 4, 1905

Several non professional teams around the nation used the nickname of  The Yellow Kids.

The Elephant Baseball Team

You might think that I'm referring to the Athletics. I'm not. These are honest to goodness pachyderms.

1912 Olympic Games - Americans vs. Swedes

Staying on the Olympic theme, I found these pages in The Olympic Games, Stockholm 1912 edited by James E. Sullivan. An American team played a Swedish team on July 15, 1912.

The next day two teams composed of American athletes played an exhibition game.

Exhibition Baseball at the 1912 Olympics

In 1912 the Olympic Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden.  Here are some of the articles in the American press about the exhibition baseball games that were played.  Note that the first two stories seem to have come from the same wire service, but were modified by the local editors.  I find it culturally interesting that H.P. Drew, the sprinter from Springfield, Mass., was referred to as 'colored' by The Washington (D.C.) Times and as a 'negro' by The Tacoma Times.

Fenway Park Opener - 1912

Today we celebrate 100 years of baseball at Fenway Park.  Many people have been tweeting, talking, and blogging about it.  Great history.  I do take exception to Keith Olbermann's assertion that the team from New York that day wasn't the Highlanders.  Taking a look at the Library of Congress's wonderful Chronicling America site we find this gem...

The Sun - April 18, 1912

Looks like the Highlanders to me.  But, wanting to be fair and to see both sides of the issue, I looked at another New York newspaper...

New-York Tribune - April 18, 1912
I guess that each newspaper called the team by a different name.  Sort of like the way that Fox News and MSNBC treat issues today.

I'll give Mr. Olbermann the Yankees moniker that day if he'll agree that they were also the Highlanders.

April 21 Update: Keith Olbermann has written a fine summary of the names of the American League team from New York.
